High Pressure Sodium bulbs and Metal Halide bulbs require a HID ballast (power supply) to run. There are two types of ballast: the older mechanical or magnetic ballasts, and newer electronic or digital ballasts. Electronic (digital) ballasts run cooler, are more efficient, and generally illuminate a bulb better. Also, most electronic ballasts can power both HPS and MH bulbs.Depending on the setup of your indoor garden, you may want to consider installing the ballast outside of the grow room. Just run the grow lamp cord back in to the room. This will help keep your room cooler. If you’re running 4 or more HID ballasts, consider a HID light controller. It will greatly simplify lighting installation and light timing.
