Air pumps and water pumps are needed for most hydroponic systems. Water pumps are generally used to deliver the nutrient solution to your plants and agitate the water in your reservoir. Air pumps are used with airstones to oxygenate your nutrient solution either in your reservoir, in the plant container, or both. Proper oxygenation of your hydroponic nutrient solution is very important for success. Overheated and/or poorly oxygenated water will cause serious plant growth problems.
Be sure to get the right size pump for your application. Most water pumps are rated in gallons per hour, or GPH. The more GPH, the more volume of water will be moved.
